The Exhibit in God’s Name

God’s name is part of Finnish cultural heritage. In Finnish the name is spelled Jehova or Jahve. (English spellings are Jehovah and Yahweh). This exhibit explores the background of that name and its use in Finland over the centuries.

On display are Bibles used by different religious denominations from as early as the 17th century. These include Bibles in Finnish, Swedish, English, Estonian, Spanish and Hebrew, as well as Bible encyclopedias.

In addition to religious texts, God’s name appears in works by famous Finnish authors such as Leino, Kivi, Wuolijoki and Kianto, as well as in Finnish and international movies, even a Walt Disney production and even several comic books. For all these, there are many examples in the exhibition.

Finnish architecture and design also carry God’s name. It can be seen in churches, coins, and even on a seal of the University of Helsinki.

The exhibit is free of charge and informative. It features materials from different religions. The National Museum of Finland has aided in acquiring some of the materials.
