STATE CONFERENCE

Our crew had an awesome time at the Colorado 4-H State Conference! It was a blast from start to finish, filled with learning, friendly competitions, and tons of smiles. The best part? The incredible support and friendship we shared as a community. Cheering, teamwork, and endless giggles made the conference unforgettable.

Our very own Karli, Becky, and Ricky rocked it and received their well-deserved awards! They certainly make Boulder County 4-H shine brighter! Keep rocking it, folks!

We're proud of our award winners, but more importantly, we're grateful for the lessons learned, the friendships formed, and the memories that will last a lifetime.

JUNIOR JAM

Our junior 4-H members had a blast at District 2 4-H Junior Jam! They set goals, learned leadership skills, and find out how 4-H has "Made its Mark" globally through Sarah Liepold, a Colorado IFYE representative. The event was filled with fun activities and amazing teamwork.

CLUB NEWS

COMMUNITY SERVICE

FAIRVIEW CROPS AND LIVESTOCK

Club members from The Fairview Crops and Livestock decided to finish what they started last year. When you stop by our 4-H office you will notice a freshly painted parking lot thanks to these members.!

As their community service project this year they finished painting the office parking lot and completed painting the parking lot at the Clover Club Room Building.

AWESOMELY INCLUSIVE

 The Awesomely Inclusive 4-H club made a "pawsome" donation to shelter pets! They donated towels, sheets, and more to the Longmont Humane Society on Saturday. Big thanks to Emmy for giving us a wonderful tour!

ROCKY MOUNTAIN SNOWBIRDS

The Rocky Mountains Snowbird club hosted a sizzling summer grilling event, uniting 12 members, 8 parents, and our local firefighters. Our members proudly shared information about their 4-H experience and their upcoming projects for county fair  with the community and firefighters.

GOATS AND GALORE

Goats and Galore 4-H club rolled up our sleeves and got down to work cleaning up the garden beds at the Altona Grange Hall.  It was an amazing day of community service, making our surroundings more beautiful.

CRITTERS AND CREATIONS

What An AMAZING Community!!

 A very generous Erie community contributed 2,568 pounds of non-perishable food in 8 hours at the Erie King Soopers for the 9 Cares CO Shares Food Drive on Saturday, June 24. Critters & Creations had 22 members, leaders, and parents who handed out fliers and asked shoppers to help with food donations. All the food collected stayed in its own community and was delivered to BBC Food Bank in Erie. Patrons also gave cash donations; $709.92 was collected and went to the Weld Food Bank to help purchase additional food for the community.

We are forever grateful to the Erie, King Soopers' shoppers for their generous donations. This collective effort has and will help many individuals and whole families in many of our communities.

Thank you, Erie shoppers ! You make us proud!

The Colorado Pet Pantry

By: Alessia Daelli 4x4 Dog Club Reporter

At the 4x4 Dog Club business meeting a volunteer from the Colorado Pet Pantry talked to the club about their non-profit organization. The Colorado Pet Pantry distributes pet food, supplies, and treats to people who need help getting food or supplies for their pets. During June there was a county-wide pet food drive for the Pet Pantry. We collected dry dog food, dry cat food, canned dog food, cat litter, canned cat food, treats, and toys for donations. The pet drive was hosted by the Dog and Cat project members in Boulder County. If you would like to donate to the Colorado Pet Pantry but missed out last month you can check out their website for more donation information. https://www.coloradopetpantry.org

POULTRY

I am very excited to announce we will be having our poultry show at the Boulder County Fair!

After working with the 4-H Office, Fair Staff, and the recommendations from the CSU Vets, we feel we can hold a poultry show at the Boulder County Fair this year! The only way we can do this safely is if you as exhibitors monitor your flocks for disease and do not bring anything to the fair if you have any illness at all. It is also important that you practice good biosecurity before and after the show. Please plan ahead to have a place to quarantine your birds after coming to the fair. We are also shortening the time the poultry will be at the fairgrounds. See the attached guidelines to help you remember a few of the important steps!

But overall it is good news! We will have a show! We have a few changes to the schedule as we will be running in fewer amount of days, so please look at the below poultry times/days. We have removed all fun classes with the exception of the Photo contest and Egg Judging at this time to be able to fit everything into four days. Please see Poultry fair book to get details on those entry requirements. At this time no additional testing or quarantine will be required, but we will have a release form you will need to sign to participate. Please remember to keep practicing good biosecurity!

Poultry & Market Check-In (CSU Vet Check & Record Book Check)  August 10th 7-9am Barn A

Please talk with Breanna or me if you want to check out at this time. This does not release you from helping with the breakdown of cages and cleaning the barn on Sunday at 4:00 pm, this just gives you the option to take home earlier if you want less exposure for your birds.)

Poultry Sale August 12th, 4-6:00 pm Barn A (this is an opportunity for you to sell your birds to the public- not required)

Sunday:

Market Sale August 13th (There are a variety of events for the sale that day, so those in Market Projects please prepare to be available all day.)

Please let me know if you have any questions.

CO Dairy Youth Extravaganza

Boulder County members learned a whole bunch & had a total blast at the CO Dairy Youth Extravaganza, June 11th - 13th at Island Grove Park in Greeley!

Nine, 4-H members & 1 Breed Association member from Boulder County participated exhibiting a total of 13 heads. The first 2 days were clinics and group activities, with the last day being the Dairy Show. Boulder County did very well in ALL the activities. We had members on the top teams in the Quiz Bowl and the Dairy Olympics. Several placed in the Dairy judging, Photo Contest, Showmanship and Costume contest.

For the Premier Exhibitor Awards Boulder County had 6 of the nine winners. Juniors took all 1st, 2nd & 3rd placings; Intermediates took 1st & 3rd with a 1st in the Sr division. This portion included showmanship, judging, educational display, teamwork, cleanness of cattle & stall area, sportsmanship, & helping others.

The other big highlight was Madeline Bennett being honored as “Rookie of the Year” AND she also was the winner (by random drawing) of a registered Jersey calf.

It was so much fun, everyone wants to do it all over again and can hardly wait until next year!

Colorado State 4-H Conference

Youth Horse Judging Team Earns Chance to Compete Nationally

Longmont, Colo. – The Boulder County 4-H Youth Horse Judging Team earned a tough-fought reserve state championship in a very close contest at the Colorado State 4-H Conference. The annual competition was held at the Equine Center at Colorado State University (CSU) in Fort Collins, Colo. on June 21, 2023, as part of the three-day leadership conference. The title of reserve state champions earns them the privilege of representing Colorado 4-H at select national competitions throughout the next year.

Teams from counties across Colorado competed in the day-long contest and the Boulder County 4-H Senior Team came out on top in two of the four categories: Halter and Reasons. The Boulder County 4-H Senior Team members are Clara DeSouza of Erie, Colo., Rhiannon McDermid of Berthoud, Colo., Mattea McQueen of Berthoud, Colo., Moriah McQueen of Berthoud, Colo., Josie Temple of Erie, Colo. and Audrey Wright of Erie, Colo. Among over 25 peers, Boulder County boasted five of the top fifteen overall individuals with Moriah dominating the competition to earn High Individual honors, a beautiful champion buckle, and a scholarship courtesy of the CSU Animal Sciences Department.

The team has elected to travel and compete at the prestigious All-American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio as well as the U.S. Arabian and Half-Arabian National Championships in Tulsa, Okla., both in October.

In her final year competing at the 4-H level, Moriah earned an unheard-of perfect score of ‘50’ on three of her four sets of reasons or oral defense of her placing. “It is rare for anyone to earn a 50 on a set of reasons during their entire judging career and Moriah earned three in one contest. That proves how accurate, talented, and unique this well-deserving and humble teammate is.” said coach Kendra McConnell.

Junior members Kaylie Schilling and Anabelle Tsai, both of Erie, Colo., competed in the junior division for their first state competition and finished as the first and fourth high individuals, respectively. They were first and second in the reasons category, known to be one of the toughest tasks to conquer in competitive horse judging.

Three senior members took on the challenge of competing in another competition in addition to horse judging with Audrey earning High Individual honors in the Horse Public Speaking contest and Clara DeSouza earning the championship in Horse Demonstration. Both members received champion buckles and scholarships courtesy of the CSU Animal Sciences Department. Their championships qualify them to represent Colorado 4-H at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress plus the Western National Roundup 4-H contest in January in Denver, Colo.

~~~~~~~~~~~
To support travel expenses, the team will host a Team Benefit Open & 4-H Horse Show in the Indoor Arena at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont, Colo. on Saturday, July 22nd. Any age and level of horses and riders are welcome. There are many ways to support these once-in-a-lifetime opportunities including showing, donating to the team, becoming a show sponsor, and donating or purchasing items in the silent auction. Visit our Facebook page @Boulder County 4-H Horse Judging Team or email bouldercountyhorsejudging@gmail.com to learn more.
WELD COUNTY INVITATIONAL SHOOT
   The Weld County Invitational Shoot was held June 3rd. A total of 8 shooting participants and 3 certified leaders represented Boulder County there. Several shooters, shot multiple disciplines in the competition and braved the days elements. There was a constant drizzle to light rain throughout the shooting competition making it a very soggy day.
   We had 6 members shoot .22 Rifle; 2 shoot .22 Pistol; 3 shoot Air Pistol; 2 shoot Air Rifle and 1 Recurve Archer. Many participants went home to dry out after they completed their relay but a few stuck it out to the last shooter.
   The sun popped out just in time to tear down and help clean up the range before the awards. Several of our shooters did receive ribbons, as all of our shooters shot well, with many just outside of ribboning.
