Meghavarta is a poetry film that stages a conversation between Kālidāsa’s Meghadūta and Kabīr’s nirguṇ bhajans. A cloud becomes our nonhuman courier — carrying longing, testimony, and song across fractured geographies. Through collaged images, field recordings, and braided voice — letters read aloud, bhajan fragments, whispered Kabīr couplets — the film asks: how do we re-learn to speak to one another when language is breaking down? By pairing sākar (form-rich Kālidāsa) and nirguṇ (formless Kabīr), the film maps two modes of devotion — presence and absence — as complementary technologies of relation. It insists that climate, migration, and political violence are not backdrops but participants in communication; the environment is a medium of truth-telling and mediation.

Artist-Director Fiona Brehony has been working with the community group Many Hands Collective in Victoria Square, to explore relationships with the River Irk, a waterway which runs throughout North Manchester where the craft collective resides. The artists and group have discussed the ever-shifting landscape of the Irk, reflecting on its industrial past, our own personal memories of the river, and our concerns around how regeneration and gentrification are affecting the area.
