Chemistry for Cosmetics (at FIT)

Term: Fall

SC 149: Chemistry for Cosmetics is an introductory chemistry course that explores general, organic, and biochemistry topics by examining cosmetic and consumer products. In the laboratory, students bring the principles of green chemistry to life by making colorants, fragrances, and active ingredients from foraged and waste materials.

Introduction to Toxicology (at FIT)

Term: Spring

Designed for students in the studio, shop, or a workplace filled with chemical hazards, SC 109 Introduction to Toxicology has students perform chemical hazard assessments and learn the principles of life cycle assessments to explore how the dose makes the poison, and how we determine what that dose may be.

Created for the Presidential Scholars' Honors Program, this course serves as an introduction to materials science through the exploration of art media. By examining historical and modern practices of making pigments, paints, and potions, we can better understand what from yesterday and today is science or merely pseudoscience.

At the Center for Book Arts (NYC)

Dark Matter: Iron Gall Ink from Waste

This three-hour in-person workshop examines the ingredients, crafting, and use of historical iron gall inks with a twist. All of the materials used in the workshop are recycled, foraged, or waste materials. Once a season we come together to make and test the inky black liquid that helped pen documents like the Declaration of Independence and other archival documents for centuries.
