I was lucky to be born on Cádiz, one of the oldest cities of Western Europe. Our history has given it an unique personality and architecture, attracting more and more tourists every year. Touristification is now pushing out many neighbors from their houses and many have left the city entirely. These pictures are a tribute to my hometown, and a warning against the effects of mass tourism which extend beyond its walls.

the outfit of Cadi
Official uniform for older women in Cadi, who liberate themselves from the pressure to dress up. Their choice: a fresh, light, colorful dress. No matter that it shows their varicose legs and their hands, wrecked from a life of housework. What matters is to be comfortable with oneself.

— the fight for a future —
María Muñoz was almost evicted from the house she had called her home for 57 years. The landlord was evicting her to make it an AirBnB.
Popular pressure avoided the eviction last minute. These photos capture the moment María finds out she can keep her home.
Less tourism, more industry. Cádiz for its workers.
Samba migrated from Senegal by cayuco in 2024. He misses home but cannot go back empty handed, so he now sells bracelets.

The tourist come and go, Cadi remains. But not unchanged.
