Jefferson Township Intermediate School is located in northern Morris County in northwestern New Jersey. The school is situated between two forested parklands, the Rockaway River State Wildlife Management Area and the Mahlon Dickerson Reservation. JTIS is the only intermediate school in the Jefferson Township School District and educates over 800 students in grades four through eight.
Our program is based on a middle school team approach where students are assigned to a grade level core academic team where they receive instruction from highly qualified teachers in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. There is also a special educator assigned to each of the two core teams in each grade level. In addition to the core curriculum, students in 6th grade participate in an exploratory cycle program where they receive instruction in world language, STEM, robotics, art, and music. Students in seventh and eighth grade choose electives that they wish to explore at a deeper level. In addition, eighth grade students are scheduled for a world language, French or Spanish, that meets daily for a full year. Students in all grades participate in physical education and health daily and have an opportunity to participate in our award-winning instrumental and vocal music programs.
In addition to our robust curriculum, JTIS has opportunities for students to participate in several service clubs, competition teams, and performing arts programs. JTIS partners with community organizations such as the Jefferson Township Police Department, Jefferson Township Municipal Alliance and the Jefferson Township Education Foundation to bring in motivational speakers, recognition programs, social activities, and social awareness programs for our students.
JTIS has a wide-range of related services tailored to meet the diverse learning and social/emotional needs of our students. These include exceptional programs for our special needs population and our gifted learners. Our school counseling program has been awarded the distinction of being a Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) from the American School Counselor Association (ASCA).
