Silko's Ceremony tackles a ton of thematic subjects charged by years of interaction between cultures. It follows Tayo, a half-white half-native war veteran who is often scorned for his impure blood and disconnect with traditional Native American culture. He gets PTSD from the war, which can seemingly only be cured by tracing back his roots and following the path of ceremony set out for him by a medicine man named Betonie in order to find his sense of self, his relationship with his culture, and the social reality of Native American life. By doing this, he can cure himself and his community.
