The cost of algal blooms on tourism: Hedonic estimates from rural cottages rentals in France, with Aliou Olofindjin and Alban Verchère. [pdf] + [online appendix]
Green tides in Britanny (France) are leading to localized strong negative externalities (odour, potential toxic gases) and may lead to beach closures. In this work we estimate the cost of these green tides on tourism by looking at their impact on rural cottages rental prices. We show that the effect of green tides is spatially limited to the direct vincinity (less than 5 km) of the polluted sites but that it is of important magnitude (up to 15% of loss in rental price within less than 1 km of the most important polluted sites which represents half of the coastal proximity premium).
