The FAA is implementing massive changes towards aviation technology with the development of Next Generation Air Transportation System, also known as NextGen. NextGen has numerous contributions to the aviation world, such as aircraft having more efficient fuel consumption, less emission production due to faster travel time, and safer navigation's (FAA). Despite all NextGen’s technological advantages, one major issue has occurred within the nearby communities of airports. With the number of aircraft airports can operate safely and effectively, noise pollution intensifies within the vicinity of airports. Affected communities disagree with the NextGen implementation and criticizes the FAA for its lack of consideration.
With the modernization of United States’ airspace, traffic flow procedures become “more precise” therefore more consistent. Aircrafts begin to flow on more efficient traffic paths, reducing “the number of people exposed to noise,” but affected communities suffer much more with the noise where airplanes fly in and out of the airport. Certain areas such as from “San Diego to Charlotte, North Carolina, to New York,” noise complaints increased due to “narrower paths and on more frequent schedules.” Local communities had enough of the discomfort to the point of “prompting a court challenge” (Snow and Lowy).
NextGen “allows for more planes in the air, safely spaced closer together, and burning less fuel because their flight paths are more direct.” The airspace thus becomes more congested. Despite the unprecedented noise pollution continues to be highlighted by the locals, Steve Israel, a New York Congressman holds the benefits to be more impactful and important than the complains. The NextGen is exempt “from normal environmental impact reviews and public hearings” by the 2012 Congressional FAA authorization bill (CBS News). Regardless of the benefits for many people, many still argues the discomfort to be unfair and unacceptable.
