A graduate of Harvard University, where he was named 2 times to the All American Team. He then played professional tennis for 10 years. He competed in the US Open doubles in 1999 and 2002, both times partnering with his brother James. He has played on the ATP Tour, appearing in such tournaments as the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships and Legg Mason Tennis Classic, both in 2003.
Thomas was ranked 307 in the world in men's singles in 2002.
Thomas retired from playing tennis in 2005. He became a professional tour tennis coach and was named head coach of the Washington Kastles in World Team Tennis.
