The next edition of online beginner course on football analytics in R will start Monday 15th of January 2024. This an R course designed specifically for people who are interested in football analytics. It is aimed at people who have never used R before, or have very limited experience. If you can already do basic graphs in R, this may not be for you, though you may feel you can still get something out of the course – please get in touch if you have any questions.
I am aware that coding can be quite daunting at first. I will show you how to get started in R, show you the fundamentals you need and explain how to create simple visualisations from some data – from scatter plots to something more complex like shot maps. I will talk you through step by step and explain what each bit of code does. This should give you a good base to further explore R and all of its capabilities. No previous knowledge is required but some basic understanding of maths, stats and Excel will all help.
It is a 4 week course, with 15-20 minute videos per day, 5 days a week. That gives you about 6 hours of lessons, though the idea is for you to spend around 30-60 minutes each day to fully digest the material and have a play around with it yourself. You are free to approach this in a way that suits you though - the lessons will not be live.
This is not a DIY course, you will have access to me to ask questions and discuss things. You will also be able to discuss with other students and help each other. This is an online course, but from a teaching perspective I like to have student interaction – that’s how this course will differ from most others.
A bit about me: I studied Mathematics at Newcastle University, where I learned some basic R (but I’m largely self-taught). I have been part of the football analytics community on Twitter for a number of years now but I don’t work in football. I have several years of experience teaching Maths.
I am going to use Slack to teach the course, which may seem like an unusual choice as it isn’t a specialist teaching platform, but it allows more freedom for sharing and discussion. You just need an e-mail address to create an account and you will receive an invite to the group once you have signed up (it may not happen immediately).
The feedback from previous editions of this course has been great!
"I would have never persisted with R had it not been for the format and good vibes you offer compared to other methods of getting into that. I work part time as a football performance analyst now... None of this would have been possible, if I hadn't stumbled across your tweet and course. I'm really grateful."
