For our project we’ve created a counseling card deck made to support Japanese American clients who are trying to navigate their cultural identities, the generational divides, and how their culture has influenced their emotions. From our research we use knowledge gained from traditional Japanese values such as collectivism, familial honor/piety, and emotional restraint. It introduces different possible methods of reflection tools like storytelling and how to practice mindfulness when interacting with Japanese American clients.
The card deck itself helps counselors be flexible in sessions while providing tools to start conversation in a manner that isn’t disrespectful of Japanese cultural expectations. These cards are meant to be gentle starting points to discuss an individual’s mental health and identity. Counselors can pick and choose from the deck depending on the age of a client or how appropriate they might think some cards are for clients. We want them to not feel distressed when talking about their cultural or emotional values in counseling, we want to be inclusive, respectful, and create a space where clients can talk about their experiences at their own pace that doesn’t clash with their cultural background.
