2021 Tweens & Teen Summer Reading Program

Welcome to Jamestown Philomenian Library's 2021 Summer Reading Program. Our Summer Reading Program kicks off on Monday, June 28, and ends on Saturday, August 21.

The Rhode Island Summer Reading Program is supported by the RI Office of Library and Information Services, with funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Local support includes Rhode Island Children's and Young Adult Librarians. Special thanks to the Friends of the Jamestown Library.

Research has shown that children who read six or more books during the summer maintain or improve their reading skills, while children who do not lose ground by September.

Rhode Island Museum of Science & Art (RIMOSA)

Thursday, July 29 at 6:00 p.m.

Young artists and engineers will explore the connection between potential and kinetic energy by using tubes, tape, and other household materials to create a marble “roller coaster,” inspired by Rube Goldberg machines. This program encourages experimentation and discovery. This open-ended program gives students opportunities to build confidence and develop perseverance within the creative problem-solving process.

Build your own roller coaster! (for marbles!) Explore Rube Goldberg’s wacky cartoons of made-up machines. Learn about potential and kinetic energy, gravity, and friction as you build a marble roller coaster using household materials. Give a marble the ride of its life.

This is a HYBRID program. Supply kits will be picked up at the library before the virtual meeting with RIMOSA on Thursday, July 29th. Registration for this Friends of the Jamestown Program is required as space is limited. Please include the best email address to forward the Zoom link to.
