Dental bridges are a superb solution to replace missing teeth. A bridge is literally created to cross the area where your tooth is missing. The process to create a bridge begins by creating abutments out of your existing teeth where the bridge will ultimately be attached. The existing tooth on either side of the missing space will be recontoured to provide a base on which the bridge will sit.
A mold is taken of the area which will then be sent to a dental lab. The lab will use this mold to create a bridge that will fit properly and resemble the neighboring natural teeth. The bridge consists of two crowns on either end to place on the abutments and a pontic, which is the new tooth that replaces your missing tooth.
You will be seated with a temporary bridge while you wait for the lab to craft your permanent bridge. This will protect the abutments and exposed gum areas and look more appealing than having a missing tooth. When the permanent bridge has been returned to your dental office from the lab, you will have a follow-up visit to set your bridge with permanent adhesive.
The bridge may take a few days to become accustomed to it, but will soon feel like your natural teeth. You should eat soft foods for a few days after your bridge is placed. After this initial phase, you will be able to eat whatever you wish with no issues. If you have a missing tooth, you should strongly consider having it replaced. What are the advantages of a bridge?
If you can replace a missing tooth or teeth with a bridge, the major advantage is that your solution is immediate. It is simpler. Teeth on each side of the missing tooth are prepared and a temporary is placed. The permanent is cemented into your mouth as opposed to a denture which needs to be removed daily.
