INTERVIEW

Uncertainty and Unfamiliarity
Q: You've said that before, right? My voice was really unfamiliar, but now I'm confident
YURI: That's right. However, I think the unfamiliarity and certainty that I felt are a little different depending on the time. My voice is still unfamiliar to me even now. But now, I like the unfamiliar feeling and I'm sure. It's not that I am unfamiliar with "What's wrong with your voice?", but rather, "Well, it's okay to call it this way. That's good."
Q: Is today's unfamiliarity also a pleasant unfamiliaity?
YURI: It was my first time feeling like this, so it was fun. Seeing a different side of me makes me think to myself, “You can do things like this. What a charming kid” (laughs).
Q: Which cut did you find the most attractive?
YURI: A red background with a spangled dress. And there are a lot of layers of my hair right now. In the drama, I have to look natural, so I put on a hairpiece, but I think it's pretty cool because I took the picture today.
Q: I heard that you filmed "Mimicus" while promoting "L.O.V.E Shhh!" together.
YURI: Right. For a while, I was busy like someone living a double life. The song is extremely cute and lively, but in the drama, there has to be a gloomy side, and it's a character that feels a little calm, so I felt a sense of disparity. But because of that gap, I had more fun.
Q: When did you first feel you wanted to act?
YURI: I was active in the theater club back in high school. I came to know the fun of acting while doing plays, and I started my career as a singer first. Then, while doing slow promotions, I thought, 'I wonder if it's okay if I try now', but luckily I passed the audition.
Q: What kind of image did you show at the audition?
YURI: I auditioned for the script of my character, 'Oh Rosi', and the director asked for a variety of things on the spot. It was difficult to understand and show right away, but even that was a fresh stimulus.
Q: You've already prepared a lot
YURI: I was active in the theater club back in high school. I came to know the fun of acting while doing plays, and I started my career as a singer first. Then, while doing slow promotions, I thought, 'I wonder if it's okay if I try now', but luckily I passed the audition.
Q: When did you first feel you wanted to act?
YURI: I pretended I was ready. (laughs)
Q: What do you think was the reason you were chosen?
YURI: At the audition, I said, "I think I was a little bit like Rosi." it wasn't that I was bullied, but I had a lot of longing for the school life that Rosi felt while working as a student and an idol
Q: I guess you could relate to the character a lot.
YURI: Since I was young, I have been active in entertainment, so I have sadness for my friends and nostalgia for Busan. Of course, even if I go back and choose, I'll definitely choose idol life, but the longing remains. So I understand Rosi's feelings. I talked about this with the director.
Q: You must have been convinced that you would be selected after the audition.
YURI: Not at all. Other idols would be auditioning a lot. I thought there wouldn't be one or two applicants like me.
Q: What kind of character did you especially like while preparing for acting?
YURI: I liked the little dark characters. I was especially attached to characters with stories and scars.
Q: Do you like dramas like <My Mister>?
YURI: On the day of my first acting lesson, the character in the first script I received was very bright. When I was acting, the teacher said, "I think you'll do well, but why do you feel so distant?" Then he said, "Let's talk with me for an hour instead of acting today." We had a lot of conversations at that time. Afterwards, he said, "I think I gave you the wrong script. I'll bring you a script that suits you." The script he gave me was Lee Ji-an of <My Mister>.
Q: I'm curious about the conversation you had that day.
YURI: When I received the script, I thought, 'Did I tell a very depressing story', but the more I acted, the more I fell in love with that character and I felt an inner intimacy. The image I showed while making music has a strong bright side, but actually, I tend to think a lot compared to that. In conversation with the teacher, I mainly talked about my values, and the teacher said that it would be better to try acting that suits my personality first and then gradually broaden the spectrum.
Q: What kind of role would you like to try after <Mimicus>?
YURI: I want to do a role that is appropriate for my age once more. I want to play a role that I can play because I'm young rather than a mature role. As I gain experience on set like that, I hope that my acting will improve, and that it would be better if I play a mature role later, so I'm playing the drums by myself. (Laughs)
Q: Among the actors you appear with, you tend to have a lot of your age, right?
YURI: Right. We meet separately with the actors and ask about each other's characters, and sometimes we study acting. It's an honor to meet good actors and get to meet them for the first time. And there is an actor named Kim Yunwoo who plays as a counterpart, and I thought a lot about how cool he was because I could feel how he was filming without having to exchange a lot of words.
Q: Does music convey the influence of acting?
YURI: I think both acting and singing are mutually beneficial. When we were filming for music video, the director asked for a lot of acting. "Give me a happy face!" In the past, I used to think about what to do when I got this kind of direction, but now I don't get flustered. When I hear the ok sign, I feel proud.
Q: I think you will feel a sense of accomplishment from recording a self-composed song called 'Opening'.
YURI: Our company conducts a blind test, and the song passed that test and was able to be recorded. It felt good.
Q: When you make a song, which do you work on first? Melody or lyrics?
YURI: I tend to think about the overall keyword first and write the melody first. And then I put the lyrics on it.
Q: Where are your lyrics mostly influenced?
YURI: When I read poems or a book, I tend to take notes when there is a passage that I like, or when I have a good feeling while watching a video. When I need to write lyrics and I am not sure how to write them, I open a notepad and try to substitute them one by one. Actually, there are a lot of things I wrote down, but there are not many useful things when I look at them in the morning after removing my early morning impressions.
Q: Do you tend to keep a goal or a diary, just like writing down emotions or phrases?
YURI: Just like the practice notes I used when I was a trainee, I sometimes record what I learn and feel at work these days. Sometimes I write down lessons or questions to ask my teacher or fellow actors later. There are a lot of things I learn on the spot, so I write them down.
Q: We usually sing lyrics about love. I wonder what the ideal couple would look like.
YURI: These days, I am immersed in the drama <Now At Our School> (All Of Us Are Dead), and there is a couple Namra and Suhyeok and a couple Cheongsan and Onjo. When I see the scene that depicts the heart of the Cheongsan-Onjo couple, my heart is full. I was thrilled to see them caring for each other in an emergency.
Q: A love line also appears in <Mimicus>.
YURI: There are a lot. I talked a lot about my emotions with the other actors. "What should I do here? When I say this line, I will do it with this mind. I feel like this." We discuss it like this. It was much better when we put our thoughts together and started filming. Like matching the harmony between men and women.
Q: What are you interested in these days?
YURI: The only sport I do is figure skating. I took a break for three months because of my schedule, but it's fun even if I'm not good at it. So there's a move where both legs are gathered inward and then stretched out, called the jar pose. I'm learning that pose with my seven-year-old children. I also learned to turn and jump, but I haven't been able to for a while, so I'll probably have to do it again. Oh, I'm also interested in fashion.
Q: What about shopping? There are people who give you gifts when activities are over or when you achieve a desired goal.
YURI: We get paid. At that time, when I look around, there are friends who buy luxury goods that they usually want to buy or who spend a lot of money to buy gifts for themselves, but I was not particularly interested in such consumption. But these days, I'm a little more interested in clothes. It's not a luxury product, but I was interested in shopping as I thought about how to style while promoting on an album.
Q: By the way, this album also means you won first place
YURI: My fan club name is Glassy, and while preparing for the promotion, I set the first goal of ‘I hope that Glassy will be happy to see my stage’. But it was even better because we won first place unexpectedly. In the future, I try not to set goals in detail or too big. It feels so good to receive an unexpected gift.
Q: Is there a title or next step you want to achieve through acting?
YURI: I think people who are not fans should think, 'She's good at it'. It would be nice to hear evaluations like, 'I've only seen her acting for the first time, and she's pretty good at it' or 'I thought she was only good at singing, but she can also act'. I'm not asking for comments like, 'You're so good at acting.', but something like 'It's not as bad as I thought' is already enough.
Q: What do you want to do after today's interview?
YURI: I film a drama every day. There are a lot of lines, so when I go home, I have to memorize it hard. And after eating, I'm finally going to watch the last episode of <Now at Our School>. Dinner menu is malatang!
