The name "Mahjong" means sparrows. It is a tile-based game typically played by 4 people and is popular in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malasia and even Japan and Korea.
Each player starts with 13 tiles. Players take turns to draw and discard a tile.
The aim of the game is to get a combination of 14 tiles with 4 sets of 3 tiles either with the same pattern or consecutive numbers, and a set of 2 tiles with the same pattern.
The scoring units or points have different names in different Mahjong style, commonly referred as fan (番), han (翻) or tai (台).
Points are determined based on the rarity of the set, and are paid by the losing player to winning player.
Some styles of mahjong have a minimum requirement for the set rarity in order to meet the winning criteria.
