Hi, I’m Joy Bennett, a 20-year resident of Mason, Ohio. I’m running for city council because I love this city, and I’m finally able to give back to the community that has given so much to me.
My husband Scott and I married in 1998, and together we have four children. Our oldest daughter, Elli, was born with five congenital heart defects. She spent the first six weeks of her life at Cincinnati Children’s and underwent four open-heart surgeries by the time she was three years old. She also suffered a brain injury that prevented her from sitting up, crawling, walking, or speaking.
When we brought Elli home to our little apartment on Church Street in 2000, home health care and Warren County Early Intervention staff visited us regularly. As she grew, she transitioned into the Mason preschool, where the teachers and therapists took incredible care of her.
We added to our family as Elli became more stable, two boys and another girl. We bought our first house, near Butler-Warren and Western Row Rd. We outgrew that quickly, and bought the house we’re living in now, in Winding Creek.
On a Sunday morning in October of 2008, we went into Elli’s room to wake her up and get her ready for church, but she wasn’t breathing. Her heart wasn’t beating. We started CPR and called 911, and within minutes, Mason EMTs had filled her little bedroom doing everything they could to revive her. We rushed her to Children’s Liberty, where they confirmed what we already knew in our hearts – Elli was gone.
Christ’s Church at Mason opened their chapel to us for her funeral. Shorten & Ryan hosted the viewing and were incredibly kind as we navigated burying a child. Elli now rests in Rose Hill Cemetery, close enough for us to walk over to visit her. We’re so thankful to everyone who helped us during those dark days.
We have the deepest kind of roots here in Mason now. This is home, and we’re committed to doing what we can to keep this city one of the best places to live.
In the nearly 11 years since Elli died, we have managed to build a new normal. After working part-time for Cincinnati Children’s for five years, I decided to start my own business from my home office in 2011. Joy Bennett Consulting helps companies, non-profits, and organizations communicate so their audience listens. As the chief strategist, I help my clients capture attention, earn trust, and win business.
Mason has been a stable city in which to build this business, which now serves clients across North America.
I’m excited to get even more involved with Mason residents and business owners over the next few months of the campaign and then in the next four years as your council representative. We have a beautiful, well-planned and well-maintained city, and I look forward to doing my part to keep it that way.
Why? For the love of Mason.
