Evolutionary Cardiovascular Physiology

William Joyce, PhD

I am a scientist interested in the evolution and function of the heart in different species, ranging from sharks to shrews.  This relies on employing a range of classical physiological techniques (such as blood flow/pressure measurements & respirometry) in combination with molecular biology (for example immunoblotting & gene knockouts) and phylogenetic comparisons to uncover animal adaptations to different environmental conditions.

For a more in depth overview of my main research interests, please see Research Lines and Publications.

I am currently based working with the group of Dr Borja Ibáñez at the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares (CNIC) (Madrid, Spain) under a researcher contract with CIBERCV
