Journal Lookup privacy policy
Journal Lookup privacy policy
Last Revised: October 25, 2025
Journal Lookup is a browser extension created and maintained by Dr M. Muzamil Naqshbandi and Dr Nurul Amirah Ishak (“we”, “us”, or “the Service”). We respect and value your privacy and are committed to protecting it through this Privacy Policy (“Policy”). This Policy describes the limited information processed when you use the Journal Lookup extension (“the Extension”) and our practices for collecting, using, maintaining, protecting, and disclosing that information. Any capitalised terms used but not defined in this Policy have the meaning given in our Terms of Service. If you do not agree with this Policy, or our other policies and practices, you should not use the Extension. This Policy may change from time to time. We will notify you of material changes, but it is your responsibility to check this Policy periodically for updates.
This Policy applies to information handled by the Journal Lookup browser extension when you install or use it in your web browser and interact with its on-page features. This Policy does not apply to information collected by:
the publisher or third-party websites you visit while using the Extension; or
any third party (including data providers and analytics services) whose sites or content may be linked to or accessible from the Extension.
Journal Lookup operates entirely within your browser. It temporarily reads limited elements of the page you are viewing (for example, the page title, headings, or certain meta tags) solely to identify the journal and display public ranking data such as ABDC, AJG, JCR, or Scopus indicators. All such content is processed in memory and immediately discarded once used.
We do not collect, store, or transmit any personal information. We do not use analytics, cookies, trackers, advertising IDs, or fingerprinting, nor do we build profiles, sell data, or share data with third parties. The extension does not request or use any browser permissions beyond those strictly required to operate on supported journal publisher sites, and it does not access or store any browser data, bookmarks, history, or user files.
In rare cases, when the page you are viewing does not contain sufficient information, the extension may request additional pages from the same publisher domain (for example, “/about” or “/journal-information”) to improve journal detection. These requests are processed by your browser and are never sent to our servers.
The Extension itself does not use cookies, beacons, analytics, or other automatic data collection technologies. All matching and display logic runs locally. The bundled ranking index files are packaged with the Extension and accessed offline. The only optional action that leaves your device is when you choose to copy the on-screen summary; this simply writes formatted text to your clipboard on your device. We do not receive, store, or transmit clipboard contents.
We do not track users across websites and therefore do not respond to “Do Not Track” (DNT) signals.
Any information handled by the Extension is used solely to:
Identify the journal shown on the page you are viewing;
Display corresponding public ranking data in a small UI panel; and
Provide optional “Copy Summary” functionality to your clipboard.
We do not sell or share information with third parties.
Because we do not collect or store personal information, there is nothing to disclose for marketing or profiling purposes. We may disclose information only if required by law (for example, to comply with a valid court order or legal process).
The Extension is built to minimise data handling. Processing occurs locally within your browser and the Extension does not maintain user accounts or back-end databases. Releases are distributed via official browser stores, which provide code signing to help protect against tampering. Nevertheless, no software can be guaranteed 100% secure. By using the Extension, you acknowledge these inherent risks.
Because we do not collect, store, or control personal information about you, requests for access, correction, deletion, portability, or restriction generally do not apply. If you have questions or concerns about how the Extension works, please contact us using the details below and we will be happy to explain or improve the behavior where possible.
We do not retain personal information. The Extension’s operations are ephemeral and local to your browser session. If you uninstall the Extension, it ceases all processing.
The Extension may be installed by users worldwide. By using the Extension, you consent to the processing described in this Policy in your jurisdiction. Because we do not collect personal data, cross-border transfer concerns are minimized.
We may update this Policy from time to time. The “Last Revised” date above indicates the most recent version. Material changes will be announced via the Extension listing or project page and become effective when posted.
