Community Work

Jourdan Laine believes in Arts for All, a concept that permeates her teaching and her own artistic endeavors. She is consistently sought out for her ideas via community think tanks to help develop engagement and education initiatives that reach target audiences. Here are a some examples of her work.   

Architecture for the Stage, a partnership between architecture students in UTSA's Klesse College of Engineering and Integrated Design and music students in UTSA's School of Music resulting in new ideas through collaborative stage design.

Defining Moments a cross-discipline, multi-layered project that connected students and faculty at The University of Texas at San Antonio in 2020.

Crossings: Two Traditions, One Musical Heritage a narrated concert experience that brought together musicians from both Opera and Spiritual genres.

OPERA: Our Story a youth opera program that gave elementary students the chance to tell their own story, from concept to stage.



ANIMA program intended to bring opera to audiences who cannot attend live theater performance, giving everyone a chance to feed the soul and spirit through the incredible power of the human voice. This program was unique, giving community members who were often overlooked the chance to hear live opera and have meaningful conversations with the artists about their shared love of music.


Opera OUT Loud a youth libretto reading program focused on LGBTQ stories and characters (OPERA America Magazine, Innovations section, pg. 8).

Amarillo Opera: A Peek Behind the Curtain created to bring opera education to the vast Texas Panhandle, home to rural communities lacking access to arts education. These videos were offered as part of a curriculum about the performing arts and viewed in a classroom setting.


Sensory Friendly Children's Performance with a Touch Tour and braille programs available, so that ALL children, together with their families, can experience the impact of live theater. This was the first sensory friendly opera experience offered in West Palm Beach, Florida, and the initiative sparked similar projects in several North American opera companies.
