In an interview with GQ, Bassett defended his new songs and what who they're about, saying, "I have a right to stand up for myself." He also opened up about how his and Rodrigo's breakup being included in her hit single negatively affected him. "I would see TikToks with like 50 million views and 10 million likes saying, 'If I ever see that kid on the street, I'm going to f*cking kill him,'" Bassett continued. "It's hard to see that and then be living in New York and walking down the street."

Growing up in a Christian family, early on Sunday mornings I would occasionally hear my mother play worship music on her radio. Sometimes this music would be from South Africa, or Northern Ireland, Australia, or the Philippines. Though international in scope, the music would oftentimes be sung in English and would be easy to understand. However, some songs would have Hebrew lyrics and contain references to Jerusalem, Zion, or Elohim.

With 1987's The Joshua Tree (released 30 years ago today), U2 didn't just become a superstar act. It rewrote the rules of '80s superstardom. While the airwaves were dominated by glitzy synth-pop acts and goofy hair-metal monstrosities, U2 found astronomical success in soaring, plainly earnest songs inspired by faith and America and geopolitical conflict. Building on 1984's The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree located the ideal balance between U2's atmospheric qualities and its anthemic rock instincts, establishing the trademark sound the Irish group spent the 1990s trying to escape. The Joshua Tree's only significant weakness is its sequencing: The best songs are all pushed to the front, while the weaker tracks are scattered near the end of the album. (Ever notice how U2 frequently puts the weakest songs at the end, as if fans just won't notice? All That You Can't Leave Behind is the most egregious offender.)

The Joshua Tree's opening trilogy is unimpeachable. How many albums begin with not one or two but three of the greatest radio hits of the '80s? Bono has described "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," one of the band's most ebullient songs, as an "anthem of doubt." While popular music rarely reaches higher than romantic love when laying out desires for its protagonists, the narrator in "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" seeks a greater understanding. He has toiled for love, but it isn't enough. He's searching for something that can never be found, and that's OK. If there is any question as to whether the band grasps the beauty inherent in this fraught journey, just watch the video, in which Bono prances through Las Vegas in a high-on-life stupor.

Tee Fitch is such a groovy songwriter I sometimes feel like he's customizing the songs for me. Sellwood Bridge has that iconic sound like it was lifted from a nineties movie about relationships, growing up, and trying to decide which parts of life to care about and which parts to throw into the wind. I CAN NOT stop listening to it. If you grew up with the music I did, this will fit perfectly into that huge binder of homemade CDs with the perfect mixes for driving. Thing For You is very catchy and since I know the person it was written for, I can tell you it's about as honest a song as a person can write. Have you ever fallen hard for someone and don't exactly know what to do about it? If so, this song will make perfect sense. If not, well, sorry about you, get out there and meet some people.

As long as I've known Phil, I've known him to be talented and genuine. He has an old soul and writes that way. You won't usually hear him sing the latest release from the coolest new band, but he'll sing songs that make you think and sometimes want to lay down and cry. He'll also make you laugh till you almost wet yourself. Oh yeah, if he takes a shine to you, he's liable to make you blush. Go see Phil Wallace play. Listen to his music. You've never heard anything like him.

Sometimes, when Phil can't make it on a Saturday, he'll get our buddy T-Bone Stearns to fill in for him. T-Bone has the kind of voice that will pull you in from the street because you just know someone with that voice must also have something good to sing. Whether you catch him with his band, The Low Flying Buzzards, or by himself, his shows are really cool to watch. He'll sing heart wrenching love songs and good ole beer drinking tunes. He's an inspiration to people like me because of the strength of will he shows in this business that will put your willpower to the test every second.

Dusty is a great singer/songwriter and entertainer but what's even cooler, is that he was recording an episode of the Texas Tailgate live show on EMLK radio with Aliza as his guest. I didn't even know Dusty Was doing this, but it was really cool to watch those guys trade stories, share songs, and kind of pull back the curtain on this crazy business.

With punk going so mega in England, we definitely got a leg up. We still had a lot of work to get where we got to, and rightly so because you find out that you need to do that. A lot of groups in the old days would be together three to five years before they ever made a record, and that time is really important. In a way, what was great about punk rock for me was it was very much a learning period. I really learned a lot [about] recording music and being in a group and even writing songs.
