I am recruiting Ph.D. students to join my group at Georgia Tech beginning in 2027. Our research sits at the intersection of nonlinear dynamics, wave propagation, and scientific machine learning, with a focus on understanding and exploiting how information is carried by mechanical energy in complex engineering systems. The group will have a strong computational focus, combining computational mechanics and scientific machine learning with their integration into experiments and real-world engineering systems.
Potential Ph.D. projects include advanced material characterization using wave-based sensing and machine learning, inverse modeling of linear and nonlinear mechanical systems, and the design and control of energy transport in wave-bearing systems. Applications will span nondestructive evaluation, structural design and monitoring, and advanced manufacturing.
Students withbackgrounds in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, applied matmath, physics, and related fields. Prior experience in every area is not expected.
Interested students should email jtempelman3@gatech.edu with a CV and a brief description of their experience and research interests.
