The yellowtail clownfish, also known as Clark's anemonefish, named in honor of Scottish engraver John Heaviside Clark, is a small, colorful fish, growing up to 15cm in length. This species typically inhabits coral reefs and sheltered lagoons up to 60m deep.
Known for its unique ability to form symbiotic relationships with sea anemones, the yellowtail clownfish receives protection and food from its anemone host. In return, the fish defends the anemone from predators and parasites.Â
Like many other species of clownfish, the yellowtail clownfish is a sequential hermaphrodite, developing into a male first and then maturing into a female. Reproduction involves only one dominant female per group, with males guarding and aerating the eggs.
