Jose Benavides

University of California, Riverside | UCR · Department of Physics and Astronomy

About me

I am a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Riverside (UCR). My main research interests include the formation, evolution, and dynamics of galaxies and galaxy systems, primarily using cosmological simulations. My research focuses on the distribution and dynamics of satellite dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, the assembly of galaxy clusters, and the evolution of dwarf galaxies in the Local Universe.

Education

I completed my bachelor's (2006-2012) and master's (2012-2015) studies in Colombia, later I did my PhD at the National University of Córdoba (UNC) in Argentina (2018-2023), with Dr. Mario Abadi and Dr Laura Sales as my advisors.

My thesis focuses on the assembly of galaxy clusters and the formation of ultra-diffuse galaxies.

Personal life

Outside of my academic pursuits, I enjoy a variety of activities that keep me both active and creative. I love playing soccer, which allows me to stay physically fit and connected with others. Music is also a passion of mine, and I spend time playing the guitar as a way to relax and express myself. Reading is another favorite pastime, helping me expand my knowledge and immerse myself in new ideas. I also enjoy outdoor activities, traveling to new places, and exploring different cultures, which provide a refreshing change of pace. Additionally, I enjoy video games, offering a fun way to unwind and engage with interactive storytelling.
