Jefferson Doyle

I am a Detroit-based sound artist, composer, audio producer, and proud dogfather. My history in community organizing and homeless advocacy provides unique perspective for stories on poverty, drug use, and harm reduction. I have a knack for interviewing complex people, and creating trusted space for honest and genuine tape. Im particularly inspired by the work of Scott Carrier, Erica Heilman, and Luc Ferrari.

I am a graduate of the historic MFA in Electronic Music & Recording Media at Mills College (RIP!), where I studied sonic arts & composition. I build custom electroacoustic instruments and feedback systems, and enjoy providing dynamic, unique musical scoring/ambience to narrative work.

Bios

José Fernando Solares is a Mexican improviser, saxophonist, composer, and sound artist based in NYC. He explores improvisation beyond listening, delving into the perception of time-space and existing in multiple realities. Trained in Classical Saxophone Performance, José's musicality extends to genres like ska, salsa, timba, jazz, contemporary music, and free improvisation, as well as interdisciplinary projects.

José has performed with renowned ensembles such as Wadada Leo Smith’s Mbira Ensemble, Burnt Sugar Arkestra, Wilfrido Terrazas Sea Quintet, La Covacha Big Band, and Bucéfalo. His participation in esteemed events includes Winter Jazzfest 2024 in NYC, Heather Kravas and Victoria Haven: solid objects/VOIDS at The Walker Art Center (2022), Afrofuturism Festival 2022 at Carnegie Hall, and the Ensenada's New Music Festival (Neofonía FMNE) from 2019 to 2022, among others.

Collaborating with notable artists like Zeena Parkins, Tomeka Reid, Wilfrido Terrazas, Jefferson Doyle, James Fei, Kyle Motl and Rocio Díaz de Cossio. José's talent earned him the prestigious FONCA-CONACYT scholarship for graduate studies abroad in 2021, and completed his MFA in Music Performance and Literature with a focus on Improvisation at Mills College in 2023. José now curates the Neofonía New Music festival in Ensenada, Mexico.
