Wichita State's GoBabyGo program modifies ride-on toy cars for kids with disabilities. Engineering students customize each car tailored to their needs at no cost to the families. In August of 2022, I was involved in the GoBabyGo program to customize a car for our child, Emiliano. My team and I customized the toy car to fit Emiliano's needs, including adding a steering wheel throttle, adding a safety "killswitch", and modifying the seat to accommodate his limited mobility. In addition, we also customized the car to his favorite character which is Mickey Mouse. I was in charge of designing and modifying the car to accommodate the safety systems. Specifically, wiring the killswitch and throttle steering wheel.
We customized the car for Emiliano after his favorite character Mickey Mouse.
The safety killswitch was added for the safety of the child and the comfort of the parents in case the car needed to be turned off.
After the car was fully built and customized for Emiliano, we got the opportunity to present it to him and his family. My team and I even wore Mickey Mouse shirts to make to the moment for Emiliano more special.
After explaining the safety features of the modified car. Emiliano was able to hop in and test-drive it. All the modifications included modifying the seat belt, higher headrest, and larger steering wheel to better accommodate for disabilities.
