For this project I took a deeper dive into social medias impact on society and how it affects me personally.
I took a quiz to see if I am addicted to social media and my results showed that I am "Fairly reliant" on social media. It was not surprising to me because I am generally aware of how much time I spend on social media. Nine out of ten times if I am on my phone, I am on social media because it is how I stay in touch with people and it helps me to pass the time. I do tend to struggle with my usage because sometimes it does get in the way of my studies and my procrastination. However, my addiction is something that I should definitely work on in the future.
I visited the Pew Research center to look at social media statistics and I found that Facebook and YouTube are the most widely used social media platforms as of 2021. This was slightly surprising to me because I would've assumed that YouTube and Instagram were the most used platforms but that is also because I do not use Facebook so it didn't cross my mind but it does make sense.
In my own opinion, I believe that social media has a huge impact on society and people's everyday lives. I have seen firsthand how much people's social media presence is the only thing they care about. It seems like almost everyone in today's society just cares about getting famous because they like the validation. I also believe that it can have a negative impact on mental health because in most cases people only show the positive sides of their lives. And because of this, it can cause depression among their followers because they believe that they should have everything figured out and also have this perfect life that is often portrayed.
After completing this project I have seen how social media plays such a big role in society and I have seen how it impacts people. I think as a society we should all try to lessen our usage and see if it has a positive influence on us.
