The Department of Film Media Theater oversees an innovative, project-based curriculum that integrates practices of critical study with production and performance in the fields of film, media and theater.

In addition to work in the classroom and studio, film and media arts students can benefit from arts organizations on campus and in the Syracuse community. The department is a sponsor of the annual Syracuse International Film Festival and closely collaborates with Light Work, an internationally recognized artist-in-residence program housed on campus, and the Urban Video Project, which commissions artists to create artworks for outdoor projection on the Everson Museum of Art in downtown Syracuse. Housed within the department is also The Canary Lab, which develops research-based art and media focused on ecology.

Global study programs specially designed for students in film and media arts include semester-long programs in London, England; Prague, Czech Republic; and Florence, Italy. Summer programs offer additional opportunities to study in Bologna, Italy; Venice, Italy; Santiago, Chile; and Moscow, Russia. The faculty members in film and media arts are working artists with active careers. World-wide exhibitions, from LA to South Africa, and screenings among the faculty include the J. Paul Getty Museum, Clermont-Ferrand International Film Festival (France), Shanghai International Film Festival (China), Via del Mar International Film Festival (Chile), the Museum of Modern Art, Ars Electronica, the Brooklyn Museum, Pacific Film Archive and Harvard to name a few. Grants and awards include the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the MacDowell Colony, and the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA).

An ever-growing network of alumni can help students succeed with careers in the film industry as producers, directors, screenwriters, cinematographers, animators, and special effects design; in photography with magazine, editorial, fashion, and book publication; as curators in fine art galleries and contemporary art museums; and, of course, as practicing artists.

Yushan Liu, a graduate film student in the Department of Film and Media Arts, won the Silver Award for Best Romantic Film and the Silver Award for Best Student Director at the Independent Short Awards. This prestigious international short film festival features red carpet screenings and Q&A sessions throughout the year, culminating in an annual awards event at Regal Cinemas LA Live in Los Angeles.

Whether students seek to create the next indie or blockbuster hit or dive deep into the historical, cultural, industrial and global contexts surrounding film and media, our programs prepare them to succeed by helping them discover and gain confidence in their knowledge, skills and abilities.

The undergraduate Film program is structured to ensure students leave with both a deep scholarly understanding of cinema and hands-on experience in various aspects of film, television, and digital media. Courses effortlessly bridge traditional academic boundaries. The historical, critical, and theoretical study of cinema complements our top-tier professional training, emphasizing the significance of emerging technologies.

The Department of Film, Television, and Digital Media provides comprehensive training in moving image art and technology, drawing inspiration from iconic film and TV masterpieces. While technology serves as a tool, not the final goal, we emphasize its importance in the modern cinematic landscape.

First- and second-year students focus on foundational courses, and then junior year students delve into the multifaceted world of film, TV, and digital media production, honing a variety of craft skills. During senior year, Film majors choose a concentration in a specific area, culminating with a professional internship.

Our studios, cinemas and screening rooms serve as the perfect incubators for your creative process, and you have access to unique resources, such as the equipment room and cinema archive, tailored specifically for you.

In the City of Los Angeles, a film permit is not required while filming in a "certified studio"--that is, while filming in any of the three (3) areas defined in Chapter 48, Section 4801.3, of the LA Fire Code that have been approved by the LAFD Film Unit:

*PLEASE NOTE: The phrase "certified studio" does not exist in the LA Fire Code, but is commonly utilized by members of the film industry to indicate any of three areas defined above that have received final approval from the LAFD Film Unit.

A project's eligibility for the film tax credit is administered by the Georgia Department of Economic Development. The Georgia Department of Revenue reviews a production's cost documentation and certifies the amount of the film tax credit.

The ability to obtain the film tax credit is determined by the certification issued by the Georgia Department of Economic Development. Once approved by the Department of Economic Development a production should register with the Georgia Department of Revenue via the Georgia Tax Center for a loan-out withholding account and a income tax account.

Productions certified by Georgia Department of Economic Development are generally described as feature films, series, pilots, movies for television, televised commercial advertisements, and music videos intended for multimarket commercial distribution. A production is required to spend a minimum of $500,000 in Georgia qualified expenditures to qualify for the film tax credit. Costs for pre-production, production, and post-production related to filming in Georgia are qualified expenditures.

is to cultivate a truly moving picture literacy so that we can take back our power as consumers, and to become thoughtful and socially responsible producers. Our method is to integrate theory with practice, combining film scholarship with creative work in film production, as we analyze the moving image in classical Hollywood cinema, documentary, independent and experimental film, television, and other national cinemas. With this work, we become able both to withstand the seduction of images and to wield their power.

The moving image is a text to be studied, read, analyzed and deconstructed. We are immersed in critical spectatorship, viewing films by makers of all backgrounds, cultures, and identities. We read books, articles and essays; theory, blogs and philosophy. In our courses, students learn to analyze, interpret and construct both written and visual arguments. And when we make art, our films interrogate how images are constructed on the other side of the lens.

We teach screenwriting, producing, directing, cinematography, editing, lighting, sound recoding and mixing, in addition to marketing and festival distribution. We teach you skills like editing software and gear operation, preparing students to enter the film industry world in our intensive film production courses. Traditional film schools stop there. But in our department, students are taking courses across the liberal arts, double-majoring in other fields, engaging in discussions across the sciences and humanities. Steeped in the traditions of independent filmmaking, students learn the fundamentals of fiction and non-fiction film through a production-based, hands-on program. The curriculum integrates creative exploration and technical skill development with film theory and history, grounded in a liberal arts education that fosters ethical storytellers who artfully explore the human condition in creative ways. Students will develop and master the fundamentals of production and post production using state of the art equipment while learning industry protocols, practices and technical workflows. Creating impactful, cinematic stories through the craft and artistry of directing, writing, cinematography, and editing are key components of the program.

The Art, Art History, and Film department stands against racism. We recognize that art has a mixed legacy when it comes to historical injustice, at times perpetuating racism and in other cases offering a powerful tool for combating it. We are working to address issues of race and racial injustice in our curriculum and to celebrate Black artists, Indigenous artists, artists of color, art historians of color, and those underrepresented in our disciplines and institutions. As a department, we are actively taking steps towards creating a more inclusive, diverse, equitable, and accessible community.
