The following assessment plan is designed to be used during the fourth quarter, in a first-grade classroom at Farmington, New Mexico elementary school. The students are in school from eight in the morning until two forty-five in the afternoon. For first graders, they get forty-five minutes for recess and to eat lunch that they split with the kindergarten students, and a fifteen-minute afternoon recess. They also have a forty-five-minute special every day that differs between physical education, library, music, computers, and art. Students will have a thirty-minute science section three times a week. This assessment plan is designed to take a total of nine weeks, or one quarter.
According to the Farmington Municipal Schools website, they have science goals for the whole year and the teacher can decide when to teach them. The proficiency scale that will be used in this assessment plan is the domain of Life Sciences, and topic of Cells and the Human Body. It will consist of four units as follows: digestive system, cardiovascular system, skeletal and muscular system, and the senses. Each unit will end with an informative writing piece that will serve as the summative assessment, as well as activities, whole class discussions and worksheets that will serve as the formative assessments.
The standards that will be addressed in all four units are understanding that all organisms have external parts. These parts all have different functions that help the organism survive and grow. The human body, as well as other organisms can grow and adapt. It will also cover several readings, writing and math standards. The digestive system unit will last two weeks. The cardiovascular unit will last for two weeks. The skeletal system unit will last two weeks. The unit on senses will last three weeks.
