This module taught me all students are different. Ms. Christie learned that all students are different. It blew my mind how many different cultures there are in the schools in the US. Especially teaching history, you really need to make sure that your lessons are culturally sensitive. Trying to do the same lesson every year, is hard because your students change every year. Whether it be culturally, academically, and or behaviorly.
It was really interesting for me that there are so many different forms of spanish, depending on where the student is from, and how long they had been here. I knew that there was different forms of spanish that were spoken in Mexico and Spain, but I did not know that there families that had been here for hundreds of years that still spoke old time spanish. I also like the idea of using the sticky notes for the students to check in on learning. It being anonymous makes the students feel safer in being honest on what they know. Then the teacher took a step further to look at the vocabulary that was used and how well they know the math vocabulary.
I really enjoyed this video. I agree that having that personal connection with students is super important. Having that connection of knowing what they do after school, who their family is, what their home life is like makes that difference to the students. A perfect example of that is on Friday I had to send a student home with a stomach bug. He came back to school on Monday and I asked him if he was feeling better, and he got the biggest smile on his face and told me about his weekend and how he was sick but was feeling better. Having that personal connection and knowing what your students like makes learning that much more fun for them.
