The Call to Disconnect: This work is from an honors course titled neuroscience-fiction, where I explored how authors utilize fictitious worlds to explore the potentials and boundaries of real world science and technology. For my final, I was tasked to write an academic review for a work of science fiction that piqued our interest. In this academic review of the apocalyptic comedy Hollow Kingdom, I analyzed the real world scientific and educational psychological concepts that Kira Jane Buxton applied to caution readers of the negative impacts of technology reliance on our next generations. The goal of this work was to highlight how over-connection with the digital world can lead to disconnection from our natural world, weaving in the plot of Hollow Kingdom as a story map for a possible worst-case scenario future.
Uncovering the Lives of Siblings I've Never Met: This work is from an honors course titled autobiographics, where I explored the art of telling one's own story. For my final project, I was tasked to create an autoethnography, to learn more about myself through the untold experiences of other people in my life. Growing up, my parents would take my brother and I to visit the graves of our older siblings, Tara, Rachael, and Joshua, but rarely spoke of what happened to the triplets. When interviewing my parents for this assignment, I began to uncover the full story of their short lives, and how they had a massive impact on my family. The final product of this assignment is the retelling of their full lives, an artistic exploration of the moments in my life where I wish they had been, and the creation of an obituary that fully honors their impact on the world. While this work began as a class assignment, it surprisingly turned into a love letter to my family.
Effects of Wind Turbine Developments on Harbor Seals along California Coasts: This work is from a biology course titled health and ecology GIS applications, where I gained technical skills in utilizing geospatial technology and ArcGIS programming. For an independent project, I was given an open-ended assignment to create a map that explored a topic of interest. As someone that believes industries should strive to reduce ecological impacts, I explored new industrial developments around the world. I found a news article reporting on new offshore wind developments around California and became curious on how offshore wind turbines could affect local wildlife. I found a study that analyzed impacts of offshore wind developments on marine life in Europe, such as whales, dolphins, and seals. For my research, I decided to focus on the potential negative noise disturbances to harbor seals from this new wind development in California. I was able to explore new technical skills and conceptual framework in order to form professional recommendations, which the company utilized in their finalization of site development. If I did not research the impacts on harbor seals and send my work to the developers involved, the wind energy industry would have ignored their effects on marine species like the harbor seals. This undergraduate coursework made a positive impact on the world, which I am incredibly proud of.
Through my liberal arts education, I've been able to explore different approaches to work. These three works had very different motivations, which reveal various values that I hold. I shall discuss "The Call to Disconnect" as A, "Uncovering the Lives of Siblings I've Never Met" as B, and "Effects of Wind Turbine Developments on Harbor Seals along California Coasts" as C.
A-B: While A and B were both assignments in my honors courses, they are very different in style. A is very analytical in approach, as I was reviewing the scientific concepts utilized in a work of fiction to learn more about the world and humankind. This work contributes more to the common good of a worldwide community, as it discusses the importance of connection to our planet. B had a very fluid and artistic approach, as my goal was to learn more about myself and my family. This work contributed to the common good of my tight-knit community of family and friends, as it explored the love and support displayed during a tragic experience. The person represented in these works is passionate about connecting to the planet and other people.
B-C: My second and third work elaborate on my research abilities. B is an artistic autoethnography produced after weeks of interviews and qualitative research. C is a scientific research poster produced after weeks of ArcGIS data analysis and quantitative research. While the subjects of these works don't connect, they highlight the diverse research skills that my liberal arts education challenged me to develop. The person represented in these works is curious about the world they live in, and they are open to exploring it from many angles, utilizing many techniques.
A-C: My first and third work are extensions of my passion for environmentalism and care for the natural world. I explore nature deficit disorder and disconnection from the natural world in A and propose options for protection of wildlife in C because I believe that people and industries make daily choice to help or ignore their impact on the world. The person represented in these works values wildlife and natural resources and seeks future opportunities to help others recognize the intrinsic value of nature.
