PhD Candidate, California Institute of Technology
I am a fifth-year PhD student in Applied and Computational Mathematics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) supervised by Professor Houman Owhadi. Prior to this, I earned an integrated master's degree (MSci) in mathematics at Imperial College London in 2021 under the guidance of Dr Boumediene Hamzi and worked as a data scientist in London from my graduation until 2022. My research focuses on the application of Gaussian processes (kernel methods) to simplifying ordinary and partial differential equations. More specifically, my work has been on four major themes:
Reduced order models of nonlinear PDEs in fluids.
Koopman operators
Normal form transformations of ODEs and PDEs
See more details in my research page or my Google Scholar. If you are interested in my research, contact me at jlee9 [at] caltech [dot] edu or via my LinkedIn.
I will be applying for research positions in industry from Fall 2026. I am interested in research scientist roles which relate to optimization and modeling real-world physical phenomena such as machine design, healthcare, logistics, climate and energy.
