Jonathan Pasternak
Bankruptcy Attorney
Jonathan Pasternak is a highly experienced bankruptcy and restructuring attorney who has developed one of the largest debtor bankruptcy practices by volume in the United States. With more than three decades of experience in bankruptcy law and corporate restructuring, he has guided clients through complex financial transactions and distressed situations. Working in both legal and advisory capacities, he has built lasting professional relationships with companies, lenders, investors, fiduciaries, and other professionals involved in financially distressed matters.
Extensive Experience in Bankruptcy and Restructuring
Over a 36-year career, Jonathan has represented parties across a wide range of industries in bankruptcy and restructuring proceedings. His primary focus has been the reorganization and restructuring of private and public companies. He has represented hundreds of individual and corporate clients, helping them address financial challenges through structured legal strategies and careful financial evaluation.
His bankruptcy practice includes debtor and creditor representation, workouts, recapitalizations, asset sales, and complex Chapter 11 proceedings. Pasternak has advised business owners, institutional stakeholders, and court-appointed representatives responsible for overseeing distressed companies. In each case, he has worked to balance legal requirements with practical business considerations, aiming to stabilize operations and preserve value.
Jonathan has never limited his practice to core insolvency matters alone. He also has extensive experience in commercial real estate and finance-related restructuring. He has handled distressed property issues, restructured debt tied to real estate portfolios and business assets, and managed transaction-driven reorganizations. These engagements required detailed financial analysis and coordination among multiple stakeholders.
Across both in-court and out-of-court proceedings, Jonathan has consistently applied disciplined legal strategy and sound financial judgment. His focus has remained on achieving workable solutions that align with client objectives while navigating the procedural demands of bankruptcy law.
Leadership of a Nationally Recognized Practice
For more than 20 years, Pasternak managed his own boutique bankruptcy law firm. Under his leadership, the firm became one of the nation's leading Chapter 11 debtor firms by case volume. While overseeing firm operations, he maintained an active and substantial caseload, working closely with clients, opposing parties, and court institutions through reorganizations and insolvency proceedings.
Operating a specialized bankruptcy and restructuring firm required sustained operational oversight, strategic planning, and strong leadership. Jonathan directed firm management, supervised legal teams, and developed matter-level strategies for complex cases. This dual role as practitioner and firm leader strengthened his ability to manage both legal detail and organizational responsibilities.
His efforts resulted in significant professional recognition. In 2017, he was named YJP Professional of the Year in acknowledgment of his long-term contributions to restructuring and insolvency initiatives. He was consistently ranked among the top 20 bankruptcy lawyers in the country by case volume and was recognized as a Super Lawyer for more than 15 consecutive years.
Pasternak has also lectured at insolvency conferences and presented at his former secondary school and law school. He has been sought for interviews and commentary regarding large-scale bankruptcy cases. He has appeared on radio and television throughout his career to discuss developments in corporate restructuring and bankruptcy law.
Education and Ongoing Alumni Engagement
Education has played an important role in shaping his professional path. Jonathan graduated cum laude from The Pingry School in 1981 and later earned a degree in American History and Literature from Brown University in 1985. During his time at both institutions, he developed interests that later influenced his analytical and professional discipline.
He served as a class representative for both Pingry School and Brown University, coordinating alumni and class-based initiatives. He continues to maintain active ties with both communities. His family shares this connection, as his spouse and two of his three children are Brown University graduates. Alumni involvement remains an ongoing part of family life, often extending to participation in outreach and institutional support.
Community Service and Philanthropic Commitment
Community service has remained an essential part of his life alongside his bankruptcy and restructuring practice. Pasternak contributes to charitable efforts, including food and clothing drives, as well as educational organizations. He regularly donates to community initiatives associated with Pingry School, Brown University, and Tenafly, New Jersey, where he resides.
For 11 years, he served on the Board of Trustees of Temple Sinai of Bergen County. As one of the board’s longest-serving trustees, Jonathan oversaw governance, planning, and fiduciary responsibilities. His long tenure reflects sustained dedication, reliability, and active participation in institutional leadership.
Throughout his career, he has also provided pro bono legal services to individuals, small businesses, and local nonprofit organizations. By offering bankruptcy and restructuring guidance to those facing financial hardship, he has extended his professional skills beyond traditional client engagements.
Music and Personal Interests
In addition to his work in bankruptcy law and corporate restructuring, Jonathan is an accomplished musician and performer. Within the Bankruptcy Bar and related professional circles, he is well known for his musical involvement. Music remains an active and meaningful pursuit that complements his professional responsibilities.
He values the preparation, timing, and technical discipline required in performance. He views these qualities as closely aligned with the structured approach necessary in restructuring practice. In addition to performing, he is a dedicated archivist and field recorder of live music and concerts.
Pasternak has also contributed to his local community by coaching at both recreational and travel levels and by performing at community events. These activities reflect his continued engagement beyond the legal field.
A Career Focused on Financially Distressed Environments
Throughout his long career, Jonathan has concentrated on financially distressed environments where legal judgment and business evaluation are closely connected. In matters involving commercial real estate, distressed debt, and corporate finance, he has negotiated among multiple stakeholder groups, conducted detailed financial reviews, and carefully navigated court procedures.
