Larson Reviews

What others say

Below is a compliation of some personal reviews and testimonials from people I have either mentored, taught, worked with, or worked for.

From a Senior Research Scientist in Battery Tech

"I had the privilege of working with Jonathan while working at LBNL (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory). We were colleagues in the Advanced Spectroscopy Lab and Jonathan was instrumental in setting up a next-generation Scanning Optical Near-Field IR  Microscope. He single-handedly set up the instrument and developed the in-house analysis protocols that allowed for the first time insight into the delicate surface chemistry of Lithium-ion battery electrodes.

My time working with Jonathan was a constant learning experience for me, from his love of science, to his attention to detail and passion for  teaching and sharing of information, everything made him one of the most well-rounded scientists and educators I have had the fortune to work with.  I am sure as an educator at Baylor he will be able to share the same love for science to his future students."

From an Undergraduate Researcher at a Top-Five Liberal Arts College

"Prof. Larson mentored me during my first full-time undergraduate research experience in the summer of 2022. He designed a project that I could do in twelve weeks and which allowed me to gain key laboratory, data analysis, and communication skills. Prof. Larson found ways to guide me through the project while leaving me with the independence and responsibility to structure my time at the lab, and he ensured that I had an understanding of how the work that I was doing fit into the broader battery research landscape. He guided me through the process of writing a manuscript for submission to peer-reviewed journals during the subsequent academic year and was very patient and supportive throughout the process. In that time, I went from having essentially zero experience with scientific technical communication to a first draft of a paper that is currently in the final stages of editing. I am confident that the Larson group at Baylor will be welcoming and deeply collaborative, doing excellent science in a way that provides opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to achieve their professional goals while expanding the frontier of human knowledge."

From a Berkeley Lab Researcher

"We were in the same group for 2.5 years at Berkeley Lab and Jonathan is the best teacher I've ever met in the U.S! I remember that he trained all of us about nano-FTIR for 3 days, and it was amazing, fun, and helpful. Every discussion we had together was really informative and interesting. I liked his positiveness and energy for the research, and I learned a lot.  I'm sure he will be a great professor who can lead global energy research."

From a Fortune 500 Senior Research Engineer

"It has always been a pleasure working with you. Over the past several years, I have worked on projects with researchers from different groups in national labs & universities. I would like to say you are the best."

   Shell

From a UC Berkeley Science Program Manager

"It has been an absolute pleasure and privilege working with you.  I sincerely appreciate your professionalism, politeness, demeanor, responsiveness, thoroughness, and willingness to support and foster the EBI-Shell partnership full circle.

In my opinion, you have been an asset and my only hope should you remain in academia is that these wonderful qualities remain. I understand that PIs are super busy and overwhelmed, but it's so important to have a line of communication and positive interaction during the course of the project life cycle."
