Madagascar President visits the Africa Mercy!
We were delighted to have the President of Madagascar and the Minister of Health come and visit the ship. A large group of media, police and army accompanied the President.
In the first photo the President is shaking hands with Dr Gary Parker who is one of our longest serving surgeons. Dr Gary specialises in Maxillofacial and plastic reconstruction surgery. Dr Gary was involved in operating on Sambay who features in the vidoes on our home page. He is a humble and godly man.
The President spent an hour in the hospital speaking with the patients in Malagasy and then visited the Bridge and spoke with the Captain. The young patient in the hospital bed looks really happy to be meeting the President!
Jon - I passed the Mercy Ships drivers test and am now a authorised driver able to use the Mercy Ships cars. This month I took the Finance team and others to the beach just north of the city for a few hours. It was great to have a short break away from the ship and even swim in the sea. My office got flooded this month when a pipe burst above my desk. It happens regularly as the ship is over 40 years old and is wearing out. Bring on the new ship! I am often troubleshooting and sorting problems out.
Ruth - I finished my first Semester teaching year 4/5. With a 19 week term, it was my longest ever teaching stretch without a break. It ended well. Students are now on holidays. The new academic year starts in August with 8 students and my year 4/5 class will be the largest class in the Academy. I am headed home to Australia for three and a half weeks in July to visit the family and the two grandchildren born whilst we have been in Madagascar.
