We are unthinkable without fungi, yet seldom do we think about them. It is an ignorance we can’t afford to sustain.

Jonathan Cazabonne (he/him/his)
Holder of a bachelor’s degree in organismal biology, populations, and ecosystems, as well as a research-based master’s degree in ecology and forest ecosystem management, my research aims to deepen our understanding of the (morphological and genetic) diversity of fungi and their interactions with other kingdoms, with a particular focus on ectomycorrhizal symbioses and fungi-arthropod interactions. I approach these topics through multiple lenses, including molecular ecology, community ecology, integrative taxonomy, citizen science, as well as literature and art. The ultimate goals of my research are to (1) contribute to the integration of fungi into biodiversity conservation plans and ecosystem-based forest management, and (2) raise public awareness of the key issues embodied by fungi.
I am currently a Ph.D student at the Forest Research Institute of the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue. I study soil fungal diversity in old-growth boreal forests from eastern Canada, as well as their implication in carbon storage, and I explore new tools to facilitate the monitoring of soil fungal diversity. I am also a member of #TeamLaboul, a research group based in Ghent (Belgium) and České Budějovice (Czech Republic), where I study the diversity of Laboulbeniomycetes, a group of microfungi strictly associated with arthropods, and fungal conservation. I am also a member of an intersectoral research group between the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue and the Université du Québec à Montréal, “Réécrire la forêt boréale” (“Rewriting the boreal forest”), where I explore the literary potential of scientific research on fungi.
