Dr. Jonathan Babcock brings a lifetime of experience as a singer, conductor, and music educator to his work with developing voices. His approach to teaching is grounded in the belief that healthy vocal technique should never come at the expense of individuality: the goal is not simply to sing correctly, but to sing freely, confidently, and expressively.
As a singer, Jonathan has had the opportunity to perform alongside some of the most distinguished artists in the profession, including Tony Award winner Victoria Clark, Metropolitan Opera star Stephanie Blythe, internationally renowned soprano Cheryl Parrish, and Matthew Oltman of Chanticleer. His own vocal training included study with respected teachers Patricia Misslin and Fritz Moses.
Jonathan holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from the Hartt School, University of Hartford, a Master of Music in Music Education from SUNY Potsdam, and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from SUNY Potsdam. His career has included more than two decades as a university professor and director of choral activities at Brooklyn College and Texas State University, where he trained singers, conductors, and future music educators.
Throughout his career, Jonathan has worked with singers at virtually every stage of development—from young singers discovering their voices for the first time to advanced collegiate musicians preparing for auditions and professional careers. He has prepared singers for NYSSMA, All-State, college auditions, solo performances, musical theatre, and classical repertoire, while conducting works ranging from Mozart and Haydn to Orff and Vaughan Williams.
At Babcock Voice Studio, Jonathan brings that breadth of professional experience into an encouraging, individualized environment. Lessons focus on healthy technique, breath and support, resonance, musicianship, interpretation, and performance confidence while respecting the unique qualities of each singer.
Above all, Jonathan wants his students to experience what has kept him passionate about singing throughout his life: the joy of discovering what your own voice can do.
Find your voice. Sing with confidence.
