I’m Jonas Stadelmann, a theoretical physics- and mathematics-oriented student studying automation and mechanical engineering at HTL Bregenz with a deep interest in pure mathematics, mathematical modelling, analytical methods and quantum algorithms. I’m fascinated by how abstract analytic derivations and computational methods can reveal new structures in physical and structural systems — from field-theory questions about phase transitions to variational approaches for quantum many-body problems. My research experience includes projects on thermodynamic measurement systems, studies of electroweak phase transitions, and simulations of ADAPT-VQE, carried out during internships at the University of Applied Sciences Vorarlberg, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and Virginia Tech.
I program primarily in Python and build numerical toolchains for modelling, simulation and data analysis. My current work sits at the interface of rigorous mathematics, algorithm design and high-performance computation: deriving models, implementing them efficiently, and using simulation results to test hypotheses or refine theoretical approaches. While I have hands-on experience with experimental hardware and CAD, my main focus is on rigorous theory and numerical approaches.
I enjoy mentoring and teaching as a research co-coach within the First Lego League competition. In that role I guide student teams to formulate research questions, develop solutions through a scientific process to solve complex problems, and craft clear, evidence-based presentations for judges.

Recent NEWS:
During the Austrian science competition Jugend Innovativ 2026, Julian Übelher and I were very happy to receive first place in the Science category for our diploma thesis project, Analyzing and Overcoming Optimization Obstacles in Adaptive Variational Quantum Algorithms. Our research focused on ADAPT-VQE and the optimization difficulties that can arise in such algorithms.
We are also looking forward to taking this work to CASTIC in China. We are very grateful to our mentors at Virginia Tech: research associate Mafalda Ramôa, postdoctoral researcher Bharath Sambasivam, Professor Sophia Economou and Professor Edwin Barnes, as well as to our HTL supervisors, Prof. Mag. Ing. Dr. Matthias Hirner and Prof. OStR Mag. Gunter Spiegel, for their guidance and support along the way.
Publications & Press:
During the 45th Austrian Physics Olympiad, I had the opportunity to take part in the Bundesfinale in Judenburg. The two-week training camp beforehand was especially enriching and gave me the chance to work intensively on challenging theoretical and experimental problems together with other motivated students from across Austria.
The final itself was a very rewarding experience, with demanding tasks in mechanics, electricity, thermodynamics and quantum mechanics. I was very happy to receive the bronze medal and to qualify for the European Physics Olympiad in Göteborg.
