Social Studies & History

This lesson is for an imaginary social studies 9 class. I decided to try creating my first ever solo unit plan with this curriculum, as I haven't studied ancient societies since an anthropology class some years ago. Also, the SS 9 curriculum is a renewed one, and I therefore thought it would be good to a) know where social studies starts in the secondary system in Saskatchewan, and b) work with the curriculum which subsequent renewals will reflect.

I made a PowerPoint for the first time! I know, shocking. The only way I managed to get away with not having made one before is that I have used Prezi in the past, which is also pretty cool and fun. This lesson came as a part of the unit plan revision for culturally responsive teaching (CRT) methods. As can be seen in my unit plans, the extensive balanced use of the workshop model with conferring and journaling was included in my unit from the beginning. What I did to revise the plan, then, was expand instances of these practices, and explain how, when, and why they would be used in the unit. This lesson features a background on the emergence of human cultures and the spread of anatomically modern humans across the globe. It was fun to create and research for the mapping exercise I built into the PowerPoint!
