Citizen Science in Astronomy

What is Citizen Science?
Imagine scientists have a huge puzzle, like figuring out how stars are born or spotting new planets. Citizen science is like getting lots of helpful people, like you and me, to look at the puzzle pieces and share what we see.
Citizen science, also known as community science or participatory science, is a collaborative research approach where members of the public actively participate in the scientific process. This participation can range from identifying research questions and collecting data to analyzing results and even disseminating findings, often in partnership with or under the guidance of professional scientists and research institutions. The core principle is to leverage the collective intelligence, enthusiasm, and resources of the public to advance scientific knowledge and understanding on a broad scale.
Basically, it's when regular people work with scientists on real science projects. We could help in collecting data, making observations, or analyzing information. It's a way for everyone to learn and contribute to making new discoveries!
Who Are We?
Hello from Ezlynn and Zi Xian! We are both Year 3 Physics students from USM,
and we're excited to share this website as part of our project!
Our aim is to create a central hub for Malaysians – a one-stop resource to connect individuals, scientists, and the public with the fascinating world of citizen science in astronomy.
ps. The cover image captures Zi Xian's view during her stay in Kundasang, under a night sky so dark it was filled only with stars. Do maximize your screen brightness to share her view :D
Why Jom LookUp?
Well, it's simple, really. It's our Malaysian-style heartfelt invitation to you.
First, we hope it reminds you to look up into the sky – to find that spark of curiosity that lives in all of us when we see the stars; or just pause and look up into the sky, to reconnect with something bigger than ourselves.
And then, we want you to look up here, to find a welcoming place where you can learn and participate in the amazing world of citizen science in astronomy. We created this because we believe that exploring the universe is something we can all share.
We hope this website will serve as a valuable foundation, introducing newcomers to the concept of citizen science and its exciting applications in astronomy. Furthermore, we aspire to be a gateway for Malaysians to discover and participate in both international and local astronomy citizen science opportunities, ultimately raising awareness and inspiring greater involvement.
Whatever your mood or interest, this is your Malaysian gateway to the stars,
Jom LookUp :D
