Agent Vinod is a 1977 Indian Hindi-language action spy film directed by Deepak Bahry. The film stars Mahendra Sandhu as a dashing Indian secret agent and Jagdeep as a comic side-kick. This movie turned out to be a surprise hit. Its title was reused in the 2012 Hindi film of the same name, however, it is not a remake.[1]

In the Dasht-E-maadar desert in kotha Afghanistan, inside a Taliban camp, ISI official Col. Huzefa is interrogating a captured man presumed to be a RAW agent. The man gives details of RAW's operations in Afghanistan in exchange for money and safe passage across the border. He betrays his colleague, Major Rajan, who has also infiltrated the camp. This is only a ruse, as both overpower their captors and fight their way out of the camp. Along the way, they rescue a girl called Farah.

At the auction, Vinod learns that '242' is actually the detonator for the nuclear device. A bidding war ensues, and Kazan manages to secure the detonator. It turns out that a group of rogue ISI colonels are planning an attack on India. In Morocco, Kazan locks the detonator with a password, and hands it over to Colonel, who has arrived in Morocco. Iram finds out Vinod is a RAW agent, both agree to work together to prevent the nuclear device from falling into the wrong hands. 'Colonel' captures Ruby and asks her to reveal the whereabouts of Agent Vinod. Vinod is attacked and admitted to a hospital. He clears his way out of the hospital to find Iram. 'Colonel', now having the detonator reaches Riga, Latvia to acquire the bomb.

The film was banned in Pakistan as it made references to a section of ISI's involvement in Jihadi groups and terror activities.[33] To this, Khan responded, "This is a realistic kind of a thriller. We have shown that there are some negative elements in Pakistan towards India and their Censor have a problem showing that. We have shown a few most-wanted criminals, those that are harboured in Pakistan, which is a known fact. May be they have taken offence to that. But ultimately we want a RAW agent to win and baddies to lose. If they are uncomfortable with that then they should publicise the fact that they are banning Agent Vinod in Pakistan".[34]

I was excited when I heard that Saif Ali Khan was remaking Agent Vinod, a film of the same name as one I had seen as a child, starring Mahendra Sandhu and Asha Sachdev (1977, dir. Deepak Bahry). The new film certainly pays homage to this earlier movie, although after seeing the trailers I was hoping for a slick and cool update of the tales of an Indian agent setting the world to rights. And in parts, this is what I got.

Saif Ali Khan as agent Vinod is on a mission across the world (clichd) to uncover the mystery behind a nuclear weapon and it turns out to be a bigger conspiracy than he thought. The only reason I'm not mapping out the plot to you is because it is as simple as it gets and the plot is probably the best thing about the screenplay and I don't want to spoil it for you.

"I want to die. No, I just want to get drunk," Kareena Kapoor summed up our emotions in this one scene from Agent Vinod, as we sat down to rewatch the film. WHY?

When many of you might be binge-watching new releases on OTT platforms, we decided to summon all our mental strength and watch Agent Vinod, AGAIN. The film completed eight years this month and in this week's Monday Masala we look back at Sriram Raghavan's major miss before he hit it out of the park with AndhaDhun.

Agent Vinod is the story of a RAW agent (Saif Ali Khan) who has been asked to find details about a number 242, which leads him to a nuclear bomb that has gone into wrong hands. While following the leads, he meets the love of his life Iram Parveen Bilal (Kareena Kapoor Khan) and an ocean-full of bad guys.

The film's plot carries you from Afghanistan to Russia and Pakistan to India, but fails to carry our interest. In an attempt to add thrill to the storyline, Sriram adds so many twists that by the second half your head starts spinning.

Agent Vinod is often equated with the 007 films. Saif came to be called as the desi James Bond after it released in theatres. In many parts of the film, we see glimpses of other Hollywood flicks like Mr & Mrs Smith, Knight and Day and The Dark Knight Rises. But, Saif's Martini was shaken, and it failed to stir us.

Also, unlike other Bollywood male leads, our hero here has a sarcastic personality. In one of the scenes, when Kareena is crying, thinking her late parents, he says, "Yaadon ki baraat ko disturb karne ke liye sorry."

In another scene, when Kareena is on death bed and asks him to meet her, he laughs out loud (probably trying to hide his emotions) and says, "Mein bomb leke sheher se bahar ja raha hu."

But copying a concept is forgiven as long as you add your own uniqueness to it and make it palatable. The technical aspect of the film is commendable. Especially, the way they shot the chase sequences in the film. It was first in Agent Vinod that the Indian audience got to see sharp, well-designed stunts like these. In another scene, we see Saif and Kareena dodge bullets while a blind pianist plays the melodious track Raabta, making it an unforgettable scene. Albeit it will remind you of Mr & Mrs Smith, but it was a stunning scene, nonetheless. But only if these amazing scenes had a well-weaved story to complement them.

Though the film couldn't come anywhere close to James Bond standards, Agent Vinod was highly applauded for its music. Raabta struck a chord with many and is a favourite till date. The song was also remade in Dinesh Vijan's 2017 film of the same name. We saw Deepika Padukone groove to the remixed track in a black dress with a thigh-high slit.

Apart from Raabta, who can forget Kareena in that pink sharara, when she says, "Dil mera muft ka," in another hit number from Agent Vinod. The actress bowled us over with her graceful dance moves and killer expressions.

Autoantibodies are produced against tumor associated antigens (TAAs) long before the appearance of any symptoms and thus can serve as promising, non-invasive biomarkers for early diagnosis of cancer. Current conventional methods for autoantibody detection are highly invasive and mostly provide diagnosis in the later stages of cancer. Herein we report a new electrochemical method for early detection of p53 autoantibodies against colon cancer using a strategy that combines the strength of gold-loaded nanoporous iron oxide nanocube (Au@NPFe2O3NC)-based capture and purification while incorporating the inherent simplicity, inexpensive, and portable nature of the electrochemical and naked-eye colorimetric readouts. After the functionalisation of Au@NPFe2O3NC with p53 antigens, our method utilises a two-step strategy that involves (i) magnetic capture and isolation of autoantibodies using p53/Au@NPFe2O3NC as 'dispersible nanocapture agents' in serum samples and (ii) subsequent detection of autoantibodies through a peroxidase-catalyzed reaction on a commercially available disposable screen-printed electrode or naked-eye detection in an Eppendorf tube. This method has demonstrated a good sensitivity (LOD = 0.02 U mL-1) and reproducibility (relative standard deviation, %RSD = be457b7860
