On the John T McCutcheon website, there is only one teacher specifically designated to ESL AND Bilingual Education, Ms. Aragon. There are a number of teachers who have ESL certification. As a school with half of their population made of students who do not have English as their first language, there needs to be extra support to the teachers and staff in the building. Cross Cultural Interpreting Services can be used to help create communication between the schools, parents, and the students.
In the case of parent-teacher conferences, an interpretor could be used when the parents do not speak the same language. Having this middle person ensures that the parents and teacher have two-way communication and minimizes confusion.
For parents who do not speak English, they may have a difficult time reading documents and handouts from the school. A translator could be used to translate documents in English into whatever languages necessary.
