Decoupage

Finding unique gift ideas for Christmas is a challenge so why not create your own and personalize it?

Decoupage is the art of cutting out printed, coloured or textured paper and glueing it to an object before applying layers of varnish. The art comes in producing a finished piece which masks the paper edges and appears as one printed or painted surface.

The pieces Liz creates could easily rival those we've seen in gift shops so we were keen to find out more.

I discovered an interest quite by accident at a craft fair a few years ago. It was being demonstrated by the stall holder and after buying a few supplies I had a go myself.

It quickly became something of a hobby and over time I created quite a number of small items. I've since sold quite a few at local Christmas fairs such as the recent one in Monalty and Scoil Eanna, Navan. I don't have a shop or aspirations to form a business but I like the fairs since you get to meet some like minded people who are genuinely interested and appreciate how it's made.

Most of the items I make are small in size and each is unique because they're hand made and one of a kind. I've also dressed larger items such as bedside cabinets, kitchen dressers and ornaments too.

Liz has also hosted demonstrations showing groups how to make creative art work from specialist paper, napkins and even serviettes.

The process is quite simple and with a little patience and planning you can achieve a finished piece of art quite easily.

Our nearest retailer is the Nook shop located in Trim which has a wide range of materials and supplies. Hosting regular group meetings they're a wealth of inspiration and support, teaching us different techniques.

There's no local group in the Johnstown area but if you're interested in learning more we'll happily forward your messages to Liz and perhaps we'll see a local group form in the near future.
