National Poetry Month, celebrated each April, is a big deal for poets and writers. This still thriving art form gets a little extra love from poets and poetry lovers. For many poets, however, it is affectionately known as NaPoWriMo, or National Poetry Writing Month. Poets across the country try to complete one poem each day of the month, hopefully ending on April 30th with 30 brand new poems.
This is a challenge for even the most experienced poets and writers, especially those who “wait for inspiration” to begin writing. Forcing yourself to write can help defeat the dreaded “writer’s block” that happens to everyone. Many, however, still need a prompt to help inspire them.
These pages will provide not only prompts, but more importantly, poetic forms that can be challenging and inspirational. Each of these five experiences will introduce a poetic form, some explanation of the form, and a few prompts. Not only can you learn something new, but you might end up with poems of your own.
Happy Writing!
