John Thruston was born December 2, 1668, at Martins Hundred, Colony of Virginia. His parents were Edward Thruston (1638) and Ann Loving (1644). John Thruston's birth was documented by his father in the Thruston Family Register:
"My son John Thruston was borne in Martins hundred pish in Virginia the 2d day of December 1668 on Wednesday about 3 of the clocke in the morning: Mr William Whittaker, Mr Richard Whittaker who stood for Mr John Groves, & Mr John Reed Gossips & Mrs Ann Ramsey the other Gossips"
*Gossips were GodparentsMuch of what we know about the Thruston family comes from the Thruston Family Register.
The property had been in the family as far back as 1638, when John Thruston's paternal grandfather, Thomas Loving, received a 1500 acre land grant at Martin's Hundred.
Before his second birthday John Thruston's parents had moved back to Bristol, England, his father's hometown. His sister Thomasine Thruston was born there on November 28, 1670 and baptized at St. Thomas the Martyr Church in Bristol.
John Thruston married Ellinor, widow of John Cary, on September 23, 1690 in Chew, Somerset County, England. Again this was documented by his father in the Thruston Family Register:
"My son John Thruston was married the 23th of September 1690 to Ellinor late wife of Mr John Cary mrchant deceast; they were married att Chew by Dr Cory viccor of Chew"
There are two villages that begin with the name Chew: Chew Magna and Chew Stoke. Both of these villages are south of Bristol, in the Chew Valley along the River Chew. The villages are about 1.5 miles apart. Both have histories dating back well before the middle ages. And of course, they both have churches names St. Andrew's. Perhaps the marriage of John and Ellinor took place in one of these churches. I have been unable to find a marriage record.
John and Ellinor's only known child was Justina Thruston, born August 26th 1691, at Long Ashton, England, just southwest of Bristol.
Justina's birth was documented by her grandfather, Edward Thruston (1638). He wrote the following entry in the Thruston Family Register:
"y 26th day of August 1691 my son John's wife was delivered of a daughter being Wednesday about 9 of the clock att night & baptized by the name of Justina."
Justina was baptized September 15, 1691, at the Church of All Saints in Long Ashton. Her baptismal record is found in the registers of Long Ashton parish church.
The Church of All Saints dates back to about 1380. It was significantly restored in 1871-1872. The tower is from the late 14th century.
Between 1691 and 1706 John Thruston apparently returned to Martin's Hundred where he married a lady named Martha.
John Thruston died before 1707 when his widow, Martha, remarried to Harwood Cary. This is documented in the book The Virginia Carys. Relevant excerpts follow:
