About this site
Based in the West of Ireland, I am a lecturer in the Galway-Mayo Instute of Technology's Mayo campus, teaching into a number of programmes focusing on art history, art theory and various creative practices.
I am also a trained signwriter, and have an interest in DIY letterpress.
This is a portfolio site, showing some examples of my work across four areas: Creativity in Social Care, the Creative Arts in Palliative and End of Life Care, Signwriting, and Letterpress
Teaching philosophy statement
My goal in teaching is to develop autonomous learners, and I try to cede as much power to them as I can, in order to foster their creativity and co-create learning experiences. The aim is to provide them with the tools to become effective agents of change, whether that be in the role of an artist, in a social care practice or a palliative care setting..
My teaching style is based on experiential learning, and as much as possible I try to implement the principles of Universal Design for Learning. I believe this allows the learner to integrate knowledge into a scaffolded framework in a secure learning environment suitable for a wide range of learning styles. This approach is suitable both for group and individual projects and tasks, and is inclusive of mature and lifelong learners from diverse backgrounds.
Ultimately, the goal is to provide learners with high-quality learning experiences designed to meet their individual needs and allow them to feel supported in exploring their own creative agency..
In addition to the main sections below, there is also an articles & resources page, which I will update as often as I can!
Examples of some projects and approaches used on the Creativity in Social Care module, ranging from shadow puppet shows to digital debates, videos and more.
Creative Arts in Palliative Care
A postgraduate module, exploring the use of the creative arts in palliative and end of life care, with a focus on legacy projects using a variety of art forms.
Arts-based Community Development
A fourth year shared module for students on the Applied Social Care and Outdoor Education programmes at GMIT Mayo, in which the students gain knowledge and experience through developing their own projects and working with others.
Having originally trained as a signwriter, I still run the occasional signwriting, hand-lettering and letterpress workshops, as well as undertaking the odd signwriting project, and this page shows some examples of this work.
A homemade press and a mix of old type, along with some homemade versions, can be used to make print easy and approachable for all.
