Parents and supporters play a vital role in creating an encouraging game-day environment. To allow our student-athletes to execute game plans effectively, we ask that parents leave all tactical instruction and directions to the coaching staff.

While well-intended, shouting instructions from the spectator area creates confusion for players and counteracts what is being taught in training. We encourage parents to focus their sideline energy strictly on positive support and enthusiasm, allowing our athletes to stay focused and play with confidence.

High school soccer comes with natural pressures and challenges. Parents can best support the team by providing positive, general encouragement and allowing the athletes to focus on the game without extra sideline instruction or interference.

We view our program as a space for student-athletes to grow into self-reliant young men. If concerns arise regarding playing time, tactical roles, or team dynamics, we expect parents to empower their sons to address these topics directly with their coaches. Fostering this direct line of communication helps players take ownership of their experience and personal development.

Every player on the John Jay roster has earned their place in this program. We require parents and spectators to maintain a respectful and encouraging tone toward all student-athletes. Publicly criticizing or evaluating individual players' abilities, physical traits, or roster spots damages the team environment.

Negative comments from the stands create unnecessary division among families and harm team unity. We ask all parents to actively promote positivity, celebrate overall team success, and model high standards of sportsmanship throughout the season.

A parent’s reaction to adversity directly shapes how a student-athlete handles challenges. Over the course of a season, players will face physical, mental, and competitive hurdles. We ask parents to approach these moments with optimism and constructive support rather than criticism or shelter.

Negative reactions to coaching decisions, playing time, or team adversity encourage players to adopt an excuse-driven mindset. By promoting accountability and self-reflection at home, parents help cultivate resilient young men capable of navigating setbacks with confidence and maturity.

This is like a disease. If you have an issue, speak to your coach. If the issue is not important enough to speak to your coach about it, it is not worth speaking about it at all.

Encouraging, positive support from the stands gives our players energy and fuels their competitive drive. In high-intensity matches, spectator emotions can run high, but parents are expected to maintain appropriate, dignified behavior regardless of game pressure or calls on the field.

Parents are ambassadors for John Jay High School. Demonstrating good sportsmanship, respecting officials, and keeping sideline comments strictly positive serves as a crucial example for our student-athletes and reflects the high standards of our soccer program.

Our focus is on mentoring young adults through high school sports. While competition is intense, parents and fans must keep perspective and uphold high standards of sportsmanship.

Speaking negatively, demeaningly, or disrespectfully toward opposing players, teams, or supporters is strictly unacceptable. Behavior of this nature violates the expectations of the Wappingers Central School District, John Jay High School, and/or the John Jay Soccer Program, and will be addressed immediately.

Parents are not adversaries; in fact, meaningful conversations and discussions often transpire among parent groups. However, if faced with negativity from certain parents or a group, it's advisable not to engage or lower oneself to their level.

Officiating is an imperfect part of competitive sports. Referees operate at full speed and make real-time decisions, and errors will occur on both sides over the course of a match.

Spectators must refrain from addressing match officials at all times. Critique or feedback from parents in the stands is strictly prohibited. Attempting to influence an official's call is ineffective and creates an unnecessary distraction for the players. We expect all parents to model composure and leave all referee interactions to the head coach.

Directing frustration at match officials or opposing teams teaches student-athletes to blame external factors rather than focus on self-improvement. Blame and excuse-making have no place in the culture of the John Jay Soccer Program.

High-stakes competition creates intense emotions, but heat-of-the-moment impulses do not excuse improper behavior. Just as players are held accountable on the field for fouls or cards, parents are expected to maintain personal discipline in the stands. We ask all families to model the dignity, restraint, and resilience we expect from our athletes.

If all else fails, walk away.
