WINTER

The 2025 John Jay Winter Soccer Program has been designed to help players maintain and elevate both their fitness and skills during the offseason. It is designed for serious soccer players who are looking to improve themselves ahead of next year's school soccer season; it is not recreation. Each session includes one hour of fast-paced, small-sided games, focusing on possession-oriented play to enhance technical ability and decision-making. Additionally, either before (for John Jay students) or after (for Van Wyck students) their hour of play, players will participate in strength training with Coach Axelson, aimed at building physical strength, endurance, and injury resilience.

This comprehensive program fosters both technical growth and physical development, preparing our players for the demands of the upcoming season. We are extremely excited to be able to offer strength training as part of the Winter Soccer Program for the first time ever this year, and want to give a huge shout out to Coach Axelson for taking the reins in designing and implementing the program. Weight and strength training is essential for soccer players as it enhances overall athletic performance and reduces the risk of injury. Improved strength increases power for sprints, jumps, and challenges, while building core stability aids balance and control during dynamic movements. Additionally, strength training supports endurance by enabling muscles to work more efficiently over long periods, contributing to better performance late in matches. It also fortifies joints and ligaments, providing a solid foundation for the physical demands of soccer.
