On January 22nd, 1996, Major John Bestul arrived in Bosnia-Herzegovina as a Civil Affairs Officer assigned in support of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division. For several months, Bestul and the team he was assigned to monitored the civilian population, principally in the Serb-controlled territory. This included being one of the first U.S. troops to enter the enclave of Srebrenica after the massacre of thousands of Bosniak (Muslim) males the previous spring.
On May 10th, a Civil Affairs team supporting a subordinate unit was called in to assist with a group of men claiming to be refugees who had been hiding out in the hills near Srebrenica. The men were ultimately arrested by Serbian police, with several accused and convicted of the murder of a group of woodcutters. The men were tagged as the Zvornik 7.
In his first novel, Bestul uses that event as a springboard for a fast-paced tale of revenge against those involved with the Zvornik 7. Along the way, a former government operative, Will Oleson, is reunited with a TV reporter, Kari Dahm. The two work to discover who is responsible for the revenge killings while avoiding the murderer himself.
