ABOUT

Johannes is an American-German artist and stone cutter, based in Chicago, US and Luxor, Egypt, who began his artistic journey while growing up in the foothills of Northern California.

Inspired by the works of the old European masters and naturally gifted in sensitive portraiture using oils, acrylic, and watercolor, he obtained his formal artistic education in San Francisco specializing in the human figure and portraiture.

His love of art led him to take up stone carving and masonry which eventually led him to Luxor to work on the restoration of its ancient monuments. He has worked there for almost a decade with the Epigraphic Survey of the University of Chicago, and recently, with the American Research Center on the Khonsu temple project in Karnak.

While in Luxor Johannes became inspired by the barren beauty of the desert and the lush Nile river valley, by the ancient monuments and Egypt’s cultural heritage, but also by contemporary Egypt, and the people that inhabit the area around the monuments who became his friends and neighbors. He combined his natural talent of portraying people with his passion for the culture of Ancient Egypt and began specializing in cultural heritage paintings.
